Mise-en-scene in music videos focuses on: lighting, props, costume, hair and makeup, location and color. These elements usually depend on the genre of the music video and the style. These elements are also important in contributing to the chosen genre. In my music video in particular, mise-en-scene is used to represent characters in different ways.

As we are a group of three members, we have divided the roles between us, with each of us taking a major role in addition to side roles.
As discussed in our class, there’s a director/ producer /art director / assistants similarly, there are videographers and cinematographers, make up artists, editors, equipment managers, costume designers etc. although we do not have a whole crew but we did manage to give each other the positions we thought would be best

We’ve broken down our music video scene by scene in detail. This process is called treatment. We discussed the shots and angles, lighting, narrative, performance and lyrics etc so that it gets easier for us to shoot the music video and make story board on it for our help. The images below shows three different handwriting as maria, me and leena worked on this all together
As there are no Copyright Laws in Pakistan until now, we as a group do not need a permission letter from Ali Sethi. But still to avoid copyright infringement, i contacted Ali Sethi directly on his official Facebook page to seek permission to use his track for our music video. The message we sent him is attached below which has been seen by him:
Further into our planning, we started developing our concepts. Both of my group members, Maria and Leena, had a totally different concept in their mind. After brainstorming and discussing our concepts with our Media Sir, we decided on the concept we three thought was best for our music video.
The 1st Concept was by Leena, which was eventually selected as the final concept. It revolved around a person whos longing for love ( significant other).
whereas Concept 2 was of Maria, in it she wanted to show how loving from the opposite religion can be hard and unacceptable.
and lastly Concept 3 was mine where i wanted to show how girls are married off in a young age, having no clue what their aims could be in life, they aren’t literate enough to know what they hold so basically revolved around Illiteracy in pakistani young women.
Leena did the research on the translation and she found out that Ali picked a part of the song by Attaullah Khan Esa Khelvi and remade it in 2018 . The lyrics have words from Saraeki as well as Punjabi language , therefore it was a bit of work to deconstruct the meaning. The theme is mainly betrayal of a loved one and gives a very classical feeling. Here is a verse by verse, translation/meaning of the song.

It starts with her calling someone, probably her lover “moon” (chann) and asking darling where did you spend the last night. she has been questioning herself why and where he was and with whom? (Referring to another woman) or if something was wrong and so on and so forth.
Kotthray Uttay Kotthra Mahi
Kotthay Sukk Diya Tooriyaan
she says that there is a terrace (kothra) on the terrace.
On the terrace vegetables (tooriyan,plural of turai) are drying.

After deciding our music video we researched on our music genre and as I discussed before, in defining or giving meaning to the content of music videos, genre plays an important role as it’s a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content.
Our group Rabbits decided the genre of Folk pop also known as Contemporary folk or Folk fusion. Folk music includes traditional folk music and the genre that evolved from it during the 20th-century folk revival moreover Fusion genres such as folk rock and others also evolved within this phenomenon. While contemporary folk music is a genre generally distinct from traditional folk music, it often shares the same English name, performers and venues as traditional folk music; even individual songs may be a blend of the two.
Deciding the Artist name was easy as its our Pakistani Culture, we are aware of the common names used in Pakistan, so Me, Maria and Leena came up with random names and so selected Zaaviyar Aazam as the Artist name. There wont be a band as the artist will work solo. Coming up with Album name we Chose the word Fitoor which means Obsession or Madness. I researched the name inspiration from pinterest.
