REPRESENTATION OF GENRE

1.  Folk music generally represents our culture both modern and heritage we show both sides in our music video we have shown old heritage in buildings and shrines and modern hopes and emotions that a female can live happily without a man.
2. Since the music is supposed to be energetic, little nostalgic but filled with passion  we do follow the connotations of the genre illustrating the visuals to the lyrics and sound

GENDER REPRESENTATION

1. We plan to show the female actress in a white dress (Shalwar Kameez) as white is a symbol of purity moreover this way, we will show the transformation of the main character through the clothes/Props she wears during and at the end of the music video.
2. The Male singer will be shown in a Black Shalwar Kameez (Binary Opposite).
3. While representing genders, the female is shown very feminine with closeups of her expressions and features whereas the male isn’t a big part of the narrative he’s just shown as a well-wisher and a singer performing (singing) the song

ARTIST REPRESENTATION

1. In terms of lighting, the camera angles and lighting work together to illustrate the narrative of the music video. Representation of folk in music videos is done by giving a lot of colorful lighting as well as shades of browns and rust to give a rough strong meaning to the character.

CULTURE REPRESENTATION

While showing the shrines and people around in the characters surrounding, a feeling of culture can be felt although not many visit shrines for wishes or prayers but a minority does in our culture

The clothes our characters wear as well as the people around also represent our culture.

The Role of the woman in our music video will be played by a great actress who looks a bit older yet simple and sleek, so after a really tiring hunt for the perfect actress as many ditched last moment, we finally found our friend who was willing to act for us.

For the Artist of our Music Video and album it was hard selecting a male model since we needed someone who looks mature and gives a rough feeling through facial expressions so leena contacted a student from a University in lahore who used to study with him in her childhood.

After completing the treatment i was given the task to create a storyboard, which is actually a visual artistic representation of the scenes we want to shoot, so that we have a clear view of the story and how we have to create our video. It didn’t really fulfill our Artistic desire so we asked Leena to make one on her graphic pad.

Mise-en-scene in music videos focuses on: lighting, props, costume, hair and makeup, location and color. These elements usually depend on the genre of the music video and the style. These elements are also important in contributing to the chosen genre. In my music video in particular, mise-en-scene is used to represent characters in different ways.

We’ve broken down our music video scene by scene in detail. This process is called treatment. We discussed the shots and angles, lighting, narrative, performance and lyrics etc so that it gets easier for us to shoot the music video and make story board on it for our help. The images below shows three different handwriting as maria, me and leena worked on this all together

Leena did the research on the translation and she found out that Ali picked a part of the song by Attaullah Khan Esa Khelvi and remade it in 2018 . The lyrics have words from Saraeki as well as Punjabi language , therefore it was a bit of work to deconstruct the meaning. The theme is mainly betrayal of a loved one and gives a very classical feeling. Here is a verse by verse, translation/meaning of the song.

​Chann Kithan Guzaariya Ee Raat Ve
Mendha Jee Daleela’n De Vaat Ve
It starts with her calling someone, probably her lover “moon” (chann) and asking darling where did you spend the last night. she has been questioning herself why and where he was and with whom? (Referring to another woman) or if something was wrong and so on and so forth.

Kotthray Uttay Kotthra Mahi
Kotthay Sukk Diya Tooriyaan
she says that there is a terrace (kothra) on the terrace.
On the terrace vegetables (tooriyan,plural of turai) are drying.

Kalleya Raata’n Jaag Ke
Asaa’n Ginniya Teriya Dooriya’n.. Ve
I have spent lonely nights being awake and
calculating your distance from me.

Again it says that

Deciding the Artist name was easy as its our Pakistani Culture, we are aware of the common names used in Pakistan, so Me, Maria and Leena came up with random names and so selected Zaaviyar Aazam as the Artist name. There wont be a band as the artist will work solo. Coming up with Album name we Chose the word Fitoor which means Obsession or Madness. I researched the name inspiration from pinterest.

At the end of our Research section we pointed out ideas and pitched some really great thoughts together that would work with our song Chan Kithan by Ali Sethi. Maria researched and found out that ‘Chan Kithan’ was originally sung by Ataullah Khan Esa khelvi but this song gained popularity in 2018 when it was sung by one of the very famous Pakistani singers Ali Sethi. We chose this song because it has an aesthetic feel to it that we three really liked. We believe that our target market will enjoy this song because it’s background music is beautiful and the lyrics contain strong Punjabi words that can be understood by people who have an undying love for Pakistan and it’s culture.
