After deciding our music video we researched on our music genre and as I discussed before, in defining or giving meaning to the content of music videos, genre plays an important role as it’s a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content.

Our group Rabbits decided the genre of Folk pop also known as Contemporary folk or Folk fusion. Folk music includes traditional folk music and the genre that evolved from it during the 20th-century folk revival moreover Fusion genres such as folk rock and others also evolved within this phenomenon. While contemporary folk music is a genre generally distinct from traditional folk music, it often shares the same English name, performers and venues as traditional folk music; even individual songs may be a blend of the two.

Maria and Leena made a questionnaire while i was working on our detailed extensive research. The questionnaire is regarding our genre to collect information from the audience. The Majority in the answers would be included in our ideas to be put in the music video.

The Target audience and market are as important as the product itself.

From my previous understanding Target audience is a group of people that you intend to host by your media product. Target market is a market place for a particular media product comprising of existing customers who will use your product. This mass market can be categorized into groups based on the audience’s needs, characteristics and behavior.

As far as Geographical factors are concerned the market is sub-categorized by the region or country. On the other hand, customers are also grouped by their personal attributes such as age, gender or nationality and these are called the Demographics. In these also comes in the societal classes which are the high class, middle class and working class and even the ones with white collar jobs.

Then comes the Psycho-graphic factors which includes the group’s  lifestyle, personality, values and interests. Now as far as these are concerned, psycho-graphics divide the market into aspirant, successor, resigned, explorers, combatant and reformers. These are made by personal traits of people and what kind of lifestyles they have. In my opinion Behavioral factors have a minimal effect on the buyer power but it matters a lot as it tells us how a buyer may behavior towards a product such as the rates of the product may effect the buying power.

This day we were given 15 minutes to choose 4 Music videos from which we as a class decided to select 1 for each team discussing the pros and cons on if we make our music video on it. Me and Maria have a strong vibe with Pop and electronic dance music so eventually we both made a list of 10 songs later realizing we need 4 so the ones we decided were :

1. Rescue me – One republic ( pop) (hip-hop)
2. Hate me – Ellie Goulding  (pop)
3. Chan Kithan – Ali sethi.    ( Folk-pop/Folk fusion)
4. Marijuana – Shamoon Ismail  (Pop) (Dance) (indie)

The last two songs are by Pakistani artists where as top two were international

We made our class listen to all 4 songs and voted out each song. In the end we were left with Chan kithan and Marijuana, as both felt awesome to work on. Here i’m linking the songs.

It is  important to have an understanding of genre and its impact on how a media product is marketed. As studied before last year a Genre is the categorization of  media products based on their style and certain characteristics, which fall under themes, iconography and structure.

Unlike other media products, music video genres are characterized by the genre of the music, the music video is based on and will often follow the characteristics that have to be associated with these genres.

The audience benefits from genres since a sense of familiarity and hence comfort is created when something similar is viewed over and over. The audience derives pleasure from recognizing certain elements, being able to relate to the media text and the potential idolization of said text. In music videos, these elements can be associated with certain artists (artists usually stick to one or two broad genres) or genres as a whole.
